ICON Make-up Academy founder and principal, Nicole Arter and model at the Alternative Hair Awards.
Nicole was shocked at how lacking the make up education was in this top fashion capital and knew with her extensive experience and passion for teaching, she could create a programme that surpassed and raised the standard of the make-up artist training in London. In 2002 The London Make-Up Academy was born. Re-named ICON Make-Up Academy in 2017 to stop confusion from the many other schools that took too similar a name in following years.
" I wanted to create a course that produced the highest level of make up artist, with all the skills you really need to be a success in a highly competitive industry. I designed a 100% practical course that I wish was available when I had trained. I really wanted it to be a seamless transition from learning into working in the industry with the tips and skills I knew new artists needed to stand out."
16 years on, our students come from every corner of the globe, and go out to work in every continent, in every area of make-up and special effects.
" I love teaching make-up - it's a buzz for me. I know our concepts leave even the most knowledgable of make up followers impressed, things they haven't seen on You Tube or Pinterest or in books... and I still get so passionate about it all.
I know my students inside out, when to push them harder or take off the pressure, It makes a huge difference to their progress and confidence which is everything. I take apprehensive students on day 1 and teach them every detail I know, discovering their characters and the best way they each learn which you just cant get with a different teacher every day.
I still get teary when my students do amazing work and I tell them so because I see how far they have come, and I am one fussy teacher!"
